    Bush Prepares for a Six-Day Middle East Visit
    May 7 - President Bush will use his planned six-day trip to the Middle East to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to a lasting peace between the Israelis and Palestinians, and to meet separately with leaders of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

    "The trip will demonstrate the president's steadfast opposition to extremists and their state sponsors, Iran and Syria, who are expending enormous energy to thwart opportunities for security, freedom and peace in the region," says National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley. Full Text

     

    OPIC OPENS CONFERENCE ON INVESTMENT IN MIDDLE EAST

    May 6 - Jordan – Robert Mosbacher, Jr., the President and CEO of the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), today opened Access to Opportunity in the Middle East, an international conference designed to facilitate increased U.S. private sector investment in the region by demonstrating its growing potential across a host of industries and countries.

    More than two hundred and fifty participants from 23 countries, representing U.S. and regional businesses, leading financial institutions and international organizations, are attending the three-day conference, which was officially opened by Mosbacher, Jordanian Prime Minister Nader al-Dahabi and American Ambassador to Jordan David Hale.     U.S. Joins With Arab Governments to Strengthen Environmental Stewardship
    Environmental enforcement workshop brings together participants from ten countries across the Middle East and North Africa
    May 5 - Affirming the mutual commitment of the United States and Jordan to responsible environmental stewardship, Minister of Environment Khaled Irani and American Ambassador David Hale today addressed the opening of  a course held in Amman on strengthening environmental organizations throughout the region.   The three-day course, sponsored by the State Department’s Middle East Partnership Initiative, aims to help government agencies integrate good governance with environmental performance in a transparent manner through strategic planning, change management, and communications.     Leading International Companies & Institutions Headline OPIC Conference in Middle East

    May 4 - Top executives from leading international institutions and businesses operating in the broader Middle East will use an investment conference sponsored by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) to demonstrate to U.S. companies that the region is a lucrative destination for investment capital, in sectors ranging from infrastructure and energy to tourism and information technology. As evidence of that potential, OPIC is currently providing more than $1.9 billion in financing and political risk insurance to 55 projects in the region. Full Text
     
    Rice Plans Full Agenda During Middle East Trip

    April 28 - In a five-day trip to Britain and the Middle East, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice aims to shore up Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and discuss financial aid for the Palestinian Authority with allies.

    Rice is following up on President Bush's January visit to the region after the intensive diplomatic effort begun in late 2007 with the Annapolis Conference on the Middle East to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She also will discuss the situation created in the Gaza Strip when Hamas seized control from the Palestinian Authority, which continues to maintain control of the West Bank area. Full Text

     

    U.S. Forensic Expertise Strengthens PSD’s Anti-Terrorism Efforts

    April 24 - In another example of the continuing security and anti-terrorism partnership between Jordan and the United States, American Ambassador David Hale today delivered $237,000 worth of cyber forensic equipment to the Public Security Directorate’s Forensic Laboratory.  The equipment, including forensic computers, laptops, hard drives, and specialized software, is one of the largest-ever grants provided by the Office of Anti-Terrorism Assistance Programs (ATA) of the U.S. Department of State.
